Pisgah Proud – A Poem by Mike Smith (2022)

PISGAH PROUD

If you take the hardroad down to Pisgah town,
you just might miss it if you don’t slow down.
It started out as a railroad stop,
named for a church that was near that spot.

The founders came here all the way from Kentucky.
To settle in Pisgah, you can say was mighty lucky.
The Presbyterians and the Baptists came.
Stevenson, McCormick, and Rannells were some of their names.

With the best farm lands in all of Morgan County,
Pisgah gave us farm jobs, and corn and bean bounties.
Of course, there were hogs and cattle, too,
and an elevator to store all the things we grew.

They had a one room school called Science Hill,
a store, a post office, and a few churches to fill.
There’s a neat Pisgah hat of which we’re really fond,
and our Pisgah Potluck Club is 95 years strong!

Albert Curry and Judge Sam Wood
were a few of the men who did what they could
to plant their roots in this fertile ground
to lead us all and grow our town.

We count our blessings, each and every one,
And mourn our explosive tragedy in ’71.
But we don’t stay down, so don’t count us out.
With faith, hope, and love, there’s never any doubt.

So, we thank our God for our home place,
we thank Him for our sun and rain.
We thank our farmers and we thank their wives,
for their hard work, dedicating their lives.

We thank our families and our neighbors, too.
There’s not too much these folks can’t do.
We’ll say it clear and we’ll say it loud,
We’re country strong and we’re Pisgah Proud!
